Behind the Red Door: Our copper pot still

Join us on a journey through our distillery door to meet Peggy, our gorgeous copper pot still.

Peggy is our pride and joy here at Red Door Gin. She is solely responsible for every delicious drop of our small-batch, handcrafted gin.

Our Peggy is affectionately named after Peggy Urquhart, wife of George Urquhart who was from the second generation of the family owners of Gordon and MacPhail. Here she is during her installation with Benromach Distillery’s Managing Director, Ewen Mackintosh, and Assistant Distillery Manager, Jessica Howarth, alongside Lizzie Haw, Red Door Gin’s Master Distiller.

Using a special vapor-infused distillation method, Peggy steams the neutral base spirit through a basket packed with eight locally-inspired botanicals. This allows for a more delicate, delectable gin with a unique combination of flavours.

The gin in every bottle of Red Door will once have passed through our golden spirit safe. Lizzie and the team regularly nose the spirit and keeps a watchful expert eye on Peggy’s temperature gauges. It’s a hands-on process – both a science and a fine art – and a testament to our distillers’ skills.

Over time, with every batch of gin she produces, Peggy will gradually change in colour. You can already see how heat from the distillation has started to transform the muted pink metal into a deep, rich copper.

Later this year gin lovers will have the opportunity to peek behind the red door with the creation of a Red Door Gin experience. Visitors will discover the story behind our gin and the personalities who craft it, at the Benromach Distillery in Forres, Scotland.
